On Halloween, we decided to come to Rainbow Beach to see the ducks again, but there were two things we did not expect: just how freezing cold it would be next to the windy lake, and a Harlequin Duck! Harlequin Ducks are very rare in Chicago, and this was the first time I had seen one! I didn't notice the Harlequin while I was taking pictures, as it sort of blended in with the Buffleheads it was hanging out with, and staying with then the whole trip, even diving for food with them. When we got home, we noticed this unusual duck that took us a while to figure out what it was, as an app we use too identify birds was being decidedly unhelpful, saying it was a Great Cormorant, which it doesn't even look like. Eventually, we looked at Harlequin Ducks and found a match! The rest of the birds that I photographed on this day have a separate post.
