On another sunny Sunday, we went to the bird banding at Sagawau Environmental Learning Center. There were a lot of birds who got banded today because of a young Cooper's Hawk who was partially molted into adult plumage. The Cooper's Hawk had realized that if they scared the birds at the feeders with mist nets around them, the birds would fly into the mist nets and get caught! The Cooper's did this and tried to catch the birds that were in the net for a easy snack, but failed. Some of the birds caught included an angry Northern Cardinal, a young Common Grackle, a White-throated Sparrow, and a couple White-crowned Sparrows. We also saw the first Blue Jay we've seen at these feeders!
