Today we visited Sagawau Environmental Learning Center to help with their weekly bird banding. Since it's getting colder, they moved operations indoors. Banding usually ends in later November or early December, so this might be our last time this year. They caught a Red-bellied Woodpecker, which was a first for us. After it was released, I was able to photograph it in a tree and it showed me its tongue. We also saw a cute Tufted Titmouse, which had previously been banded, and many cute fox sparrows, which are one of my favorites. Last, but definitely not least, we met Douglas the Snapping Turtle. Douglas was found as an egg and hatched in captivity. The plan had been to release him, but by the time he was big enough, he was too domesticated. He likes to watch humans and will walk around the banding organizer's office. Douglas is a good guy, but don't put your fingers in front of his mouth!
