10.30.24 Roadside and White River National Forest, Colorado (California trip Day 2)

From 10.29.24-11.6.24 my father, brother and I drove from Chicago to San Diego and back. This is part of Day 2.

This is what we saw this day: 1 Northern Harrier, 17 Red-tailed Hawks (one was a dark morph!), 7 American Kestrels, 2 Ferruginous Hawks, 1 unidentified falcon, mountains, valleys, ravens and magpies at a distance, little stream at White River National Forest, cool trees, mountain chickadees, play-fighting squirrels, chipmunk

Driving through the Rocky Mountains was amazing! ...and then we got caught in a snowstorm, so we couldn't see anything and the roads started to get slippery. Getting out of the car at a trailhead in White River National Forest was welcome, despite how cold and snowy it was. Once on the path, we immediately stumbled upon a foraging flock of Mountain and Black-capped Chickadees! The Mountain Chickadees were being very shy, and I only got one picture of one of them! I didn't even know I got that picture until we got home!

Black-capped Chickadee

I'm pretty sure this is a Least Chipmunk

While we didn't get out of the car, we saw lots of birds while driving! Ferruginous Hawks, Red-tailed Hawks, a Bald Eagle, and lots of European Starlings!
